Cruz, Buffs Lead after One Round of Buffalo Stampede

March 31, 2008

After the first round of the 2008 Buffalo Stampede, the only score in red numbers belonged to a Buff as West Texas A&M redshirt freshman golfer Colin Cruz fired a sub-par 69 to lead the field. As a team, the Buffs also sit atop the standings with a team score of 304, one shot up on Western New Mexico.

The tournament, which was scheduled for two rounds on Monday, was shortened to just one round for the day due to high wings at La Paloma Golf Club.

Cruz, used a back nine 34, to leap to the top of the list of individuals, four shots up on WNMU's Scott Crichton.

A pair of Buffs turned in scorecards of 78 on the day as both Jon Musser (40-38=78) and Brandon Holub (39-39=78) each sit in a tie for 14th. Sophomore Geoff Phemister (40-39=79) is just one shot back in a tie for 19th.

Freshman Roy Holdeman rounded out the Buffs' scoring contingency with an 86 on day one. Three WT golfers also participated in the event as individuals: Tanner White (41-43=80), Jonathan Shelley (41-43=84) and Jay Stevens (46-44=90).

The event, which is being presented by the Ryan Palmer Foundation, will continue on Tuesday at La Paloma Golf Club when the second and final round begins at 8:30 p.m.
