AMARILLO, Texas - Redshirt freshman Colin Cruz held on to capture the first individual tournament title of his collegiate career, but as a team the West Texas A&M men's golf team fell just one stroke short of the team title on Tuesday during the final round of play at the Buffalo Stampede at La Paloma Golf Club. The Buffs finished with a two-day team total of 597 finishing second to St. Mary's, who as a team fired a second day 290 to end the event with a two-day total of 598. Cruz, who led the event after shooting an opening round 69 on Monday, fired a day two 72 to finish with a 141, to edge St. Mary's Jerry Holguin, who ended play with a 146. On of the biggest moves up the leader board came from WT sophomore Geoff Phemister, who shot a second round 68 after a 79 to finish in third place individually. Brandon Holub (78-76=154) ended the event in a tie for 18th place, just two shots up on teammate Jon Musser (78-78=156) in 14th place. Participating as an individual, Tanner White (80-76=156) closed in a tie for 24th places, while WT's Jonathan Shelley (84-83=167) and Jay Stevens (90-82=172) finished in 36th and 39th place individually. |
